Blog: October Thoughts from an Extension Specialist

"The weather is cooling, and my kids are getting ready for Halloween. The prescribed fire season is ramping up for many, and many landowner groups are planning their fall meetings.

Fall is a great time to enjoy being outdoors however you like, such as just standing and walking in your woods. Being immersed in the woods, called nature bathing, can calm your central nervous system and provide numerous health benefits. The more you learn about your forest and how to keep it healthy and growing, the more connected you will feel to your land.

Late fall is an easy time to document invasive species on your property. Many invasive plants are either evergreen or drop their leaves late. Find helpful invasive species information on our Extension Forestry publication.

Forestry can offer a lot for everyone. If you have a great idea for a class not listed, talk to your local County Extension Agent to request a particular class in your county. If you have a group that could benefit from a specific forestry topic, feel free to reach out!

One of my favorite recent classes took place in August at the Watauga County Extension Office. This class combined wood products and forestry to help you process wood on your property, including cutting, hauling, milling, and drying. This class featured Ian Snider, a local horse logger and Certified Forester, who encouraged landowners to see trees as more than just lumber.

We hope to see you at an upcoming event, no matter your property size. Browse our upcoming October and November events below."

Fall Foliage Outlook

Outlooks suggest that fall foliage this year may be patchy, muted, and shorter than usual. Learn how a mix of drought, heat, and rainfall conditions could create a "patchwork" of foliage, with some areas showing duller colors or shorter seasons, in this NC State College of Natural Resources article featuring Dr. Robert Bardon.
Western NC has a higher chance of seeing vibrant fall foliage compared to the Piedmont and Coastal Plain. But don't worry, NC will still offer many places to see the hues of fall colors, even if conditions vary across the state. Learn More »

New 'Emerging Markets Partnership'

Together with the Sustainable Forestry and Land Retention Project, Working Lands Trust, and the Sandhills Prescribed Burn Association, the “Emerging Markets Partnership” was created to provide workshops, technical assistance, and publications to increase landowner access to markets and resources. The goal is to empower forestry families for the future, sharing emerging markets such as carbon markets, pine straw, land leasing, ecosystem services, conservation easements, milling, and more!
