"Meet the Fire Starters Restoring One of North America’s Greatest Forests" The National Audubon Society recently highlighted some of our Extension
Associates' work with wildland & prescribed fire. The story features longleaf pine restoration efforts, Prescribed Burn Associations, the recent women-in-fire training event in Eastern NC, key people, and more. Give it a read! "In the Southeast, the fates of longleaf pines and Red-cockaded Woodpeckers are inextricably tied. To save both, we must remember how to embrace fire."

Don't Forget to Hang Sticky Bands to Prevent Cankerworm
If your trees are defoliated by cankerworms in the spring and you want to prevent this from
happening next spring, take this easy, very effective step to prevent cankerworms. Wait until most leaves have dropped and wrap sticky bands around your tree trunks. Female moths get caught in this sticky substance as they ascend, never making it to the tree top and therefore never lay eggs. Remember to check the bands often and remove them when the weather starts getting warm in early spring to protect other species.

NC Timber Prices in Decline
Third quarter timber price data saw decreasing timber prices across NC. Prices decreased for pine sawtimber, pine chip-n-saw,
pine pulpwood and hardwood pulpwood while hardwood sawtimber saw a price increase. This drop in pine prices and increase in hardwood sawtimber prices is not unexpected due to historic seasonal trends. These seasonal trends are often the result of drier weather conditions alleviate supply constraints.
