An Explanation of Ownership Rights in Property

Essential to decisions concerning your resources for forest management and legacy transfer planning is understanding the nature and extent of your ownership rights in the land and things available to you for disposal for personal and business use. Sometimes, particularly with some inherited or gifted property, determination of ownership requires an extensive examination of the public record and may have to be proven in court. This recent publication discusses the basics of how property is classified and how title (ownership) to property is held, and the legal rights of disposition associated with that ownership.

Identifying Emerald Ash Borer

Phenology models predict that adult emerald ash borers (EAB) are emerging or have emerged in regions across NC. In North Carolina, the EAB has one generation per year. Depending on seasonal weather, adult EAB emerge as early as April through mid-summer. They are short-lived (3-4 weeks), feeding on ash leaves before mating, laying eggs on tree bark, and dying. Eggs hatch about three weeks later and young larvae bore into the bark to begin feeding. Take a look at this video to determine whether your ash tree is infested.

Sustainable Forestry & Land Retention Project Expands to Serve Woodland Owners in Six More N.C. Counties

The Sustainable Forestry and Land Retention Project (SFLRP) is expanding from its original, seven-county service territory to assist woodland owners in Edgecombe, Granville, Martin, Nash, Vance, and Warren counties. Forest landowners in these thirteen North Carolina counties are eligible to participate in a nonprofit program that for the past nine years has helped families in the northeastern part of the state implement healthy forestry practices and increase the asset value of their land so their heirs can keep it.

This workshop in Johnston County focuses on the agents that disrupt forest health, reducing forest productivity, causing mortality, or harming our environments. Come learn more from NC State Extension Specialist Dr. Kelly Oten and Clemson Extension Specialist Dr. Dave Coyle. The purpose of the Youth STEAM Summit is to connect youth to science, technology, engineering, agriculture and mathematics to increase their knowledge and help them identify career options.
